Everything you need to know to start strength training in midlife

Sometimes there is a gap between knowing you WANT to start, and being confident to know HOW.

You don’t necessarily need a lot of equipment or a PT standing next to you – you just need to know WHAT to do.

Learn to Lift sessions are educational, stand-alone sessions that will equip you to start or continue strength training in your own way – at a gym, at home, with a PT, or with an online coach.

It’s an opportunity to learn and practice a range of exercises – regardless of your experience level.

📣 Learn to Lift is Going ONLINE! 📣

I have really enjoyed running Learn to Lift sessions this year, however with the scheduling challenges of small group events, I have decided to take this course ONLINE so that you can learn from anywhere at your own pace.

All the same great info and content, available any time to watch & re-watch, and practice at home.

If you’d like to be the first to hear when this course is available, please pop your details here and I’ll be in touch when it’s up and running!

What is Learn to Lift?

These sessions are an opportunity to work with an experienced female PT, where I go through all the fundamentals of strength training (posture, breathing, footwear, technique, weight selection etc.) and equip you to have the confidence to workout on your own at home or a gym.

  • Face-to-face in the Spark PT private gym on Brisbane’s southside (Holland Park West)
  • 2 hour stand-alone sessions (not for on-going, regular workouts)
  • Maximum 5 people per class
  • Learn the foundational principles of safe lifting & how to choose the right weights
  • Learn a comprehensive set of strength training exercises
  • Take home cheat-sheet with form reminders

I really enjoyed the small group session with Jess and got lots of good information and tips even though I’ve already been exercising for a long time before joining her session. Since the session, I’ve definitely maximised my workouts from home and feel they are more targeted and efficient than before. I would highly recommend, whatever your age or your skill level.

midlife strength training for women in brisbane

Learn to Lift is PERFECT for...

Women who want to start strength training at home or their local gym - and yes, at any age and experience level!

Women who would like to make sure they are moving in a safe and effective way.

Women who want the flexibility of online coaching, but also want to get started with good technique.

Women who are already strength training and want to consolidate and improve their form.

Women who are interested in strength training and would like a low-cost "peek behind the curtain" to see what it's all about.

Learn to Lift is NOT designed for...

Anyone wanting to DO a full body workout. Yes, you will move and practice - but these sessions are primarily for learning skills to implement in your strength sessions in your own time.

Experienced lifters. If you have specific techniques you'd like to learn, or form you'd like critiqued, I recommend booking a one-on-one consultation instead.

Anyone wanting individual help to learn their own program (either self-developed, AI generated, or from another PT). I have a set "curriculum" for Learn to Lift sessions that covers the fundamentals of strength training and a range of common exercises.

What You Need

  • Comfortable clothing (preferably activewear) that you can move freely in, but nothing too loose.
  • We will talk about footwear during the course – please wear whatever you usually workout in, or comfortable sneakers. Bare feet are fine too.
  • Water bottle.
  • Gym towel.

Participant Risk

  • Participation in Learn to Lift is undertaken at your own risk. You can read the full release & waiver conditions of training with Spark PT here. If you have injuries or physical limitations, you can most likely still learn and participate to a suitable level for you. Feel free to reach out before booking if you are unsure and would like to chat.

Your Coach

My name is Jess, I’m 41, just a regular wife, mum, runner, business owner and dog fanatic. I believe every woman should be equipped to lean in to this rather crazy stage of life and learn how to work with their body. Yep – what worked before doesn’t seem to work anymore. It can be frustrating… but you can be your strongest, healthiest and fittest self after 40 – and I’m here to tell you, it feels amazing!

I have been working with women for years, and I’m going through all the same struggles myself. There’s still plenty of insecurity and belly fat hiding under high-waisted activewear and nicely lit photos! But fitness over 40 is about more than the scale or the mirror. It’s about confidence, how you feel in your body, what your body can DO for you.

And the long-term benefits are just as important. You don’t have to resign yourself to a depressing inevitable decline into dementia and frailty. Now is the time to embrace a new attitude and a new approach – don’t wait until you’re struggling up the stairs or unable to bring all the groceries inside in one trip.

This isn’t a journey you take alone. Join me and a community of women who want to make smart, practical choices to improve their health and longevity.
